On-Farm Composting 101 Workshop

This workshop is designed for farmers, their employees and professional agricultural service providers interested in implementing composting practices at their farms or the farms they advise. Participants will learn how to turn common farm materials, such as manures, waste hay, waste silage, and other organic materials, such as food scraps, into high quality compost. This 6-hour workshop includes a dynamic combination of lectures, demonstrations and hands-on exercises designed to ensure an effective combination of operator understanding and application. Topics covered include: principles of composting, compost site identification and layout, compost recipe development, feedstock combining methods, windrow construction, pile monitoring, windrow aeration, aerated static pile composting, and compost screening.
Time: Registration begins at 8:30, workshop begins at 9am and ends at 3:30pm
Cost: $25 for farmers, $10 per additional individuals from the same farm. $50 for non-farmers; no one is turned away for lack of funds.
Location: Highfields Center for Composting’s Compost Research and Education Facility, Wolcott Vermont
